Back in the Saddle...

Our first week of school is under our belts and after a brief 4-day break, we're off again.  Our school year kicked off with two field trips the week before school even started.  We visited the Railroad Museum in Sacramento with friends, and we also visited Marshall Gold Discovery Museum and  went gold panning in the American River with Grammy & Aunt Susan.

During our first week of school, we began a routine (still ironing out the wrinkles) and in addition to learning some math & reading skills, both kids are memorizing a Bible verse a week and we are also working on memorizing The Star Spangled Banner in it's entirety-all 32 lines of it.  My goal for them is to have it memorized by Thanksgiving.  (There's a lot of tough words in there for almost 4 year old & 6 year old-and even some well versed 38 year olds)  In addition to memorizing it, I want them to know who & why it was written-so it's a bit of a history lesson as well.

For science this year, we are focusing on a marine biology course with our homeschool co-op this year. We'll be meeting 1x a month to reveiw the lesson and work on experiments and projects.  Our first session is next week.  So far the most interesting thing in Lesson 1 for Leah (ok...for me too) is discovering that a manta ray can grow as large as 22 feet in width!  Can you imagine snorkeling/diving and coming across this monstrosity?

This year we've decided to have Leah take a sabbatical from her Awana's group at church.  Nolan will participate in the "Cubbies" portion this year, so during those evenings that he attends "Cubbies", Leah and I will be working on sewing lessons and ???  It will be good to have some one-on-one time with Leah each week, and Dad and I will switch it up so she can have some Father/Daughter time as well.

During Leah's 4 day break, Mema snuck in a brief field trip to the Santa Barbara Mission.  Leah's favorite part about this field trip:  The fountain where she threw in a coin to make a wish :)

Stayed tuned for more as our 1st grade year & Junior Kindergarten year continue.  (Ok...I know Nolan doesn't technically qualify for this status-but this kid is trying to keep up with his 1st grade sister-so I've got to give him some credit :)    )
