Ranch Daze

I’m sorry I’ve not written much on the blog recently.  Not much new going on here.  Covid-19 doesn’t affect spring on the ranch, so we had grape vines to prune, gardens to be planted, chicken coop & run to be completed, fire protection dozering on 120 acres, new cattled delivery, and 19 month old cattle to butcher.  No rest for the weary.  In between all that, since we homeschool, the kids school days have not been affected and they continue their school days like usual for their 7th & 9th grade coursework.  They will end the school the last week in June.

The chicken coop is  mostly complete, but certainly habitable for chickens.  We have a few more finishing touches on it that we hope to get done in the coming weeks.  It has been a two-year project that I removed Scott from last year  so he could finish our master bathroom.  (No, the bathroom is not completed, but I do have a vanity and flooring-I’m just missing a shower now-and I’ve thankfully always had a toilet in there 😉).

We took delivery of our first chicks in early April.  We had 16 chickens up until last week, when we took delivery of 15 more!  Kids will be selling eggs in about 5-6 months, so if you’re local and looking for farm fresh eggs, you know who to call 😊.

I've shared some photos below of the new cattle, dozer work and chicken coop (and chickens)

Rona & Winnie aka Winnie the Moo

-please note, the reason Nolan is not appearing in the chicken photos is because he's not as adventurous as Leah when it come to holding them.  But he's been a great builder for us with my garden beds, chicken nesting boxes, brooders, coop doors and even designed  and built a bench for me to sit in to enjoy watching the chickens!

My "little man" who's pretty much as tall as I am now!

Our Chicken Run in progress...on May 2nd

This is George-1 of our Barred Rock Roosters

This is Siesta-1 of our White-faced Black Spanish Chickens

A few of the chicks-approximately 3 weeks old

Our recent chick delivery at 3 days old

This is George-our now 6 week old Rooster checking the chicks out

Can you see our Rooster Fred?  He's George's younger brother.

I think Fred is liking Leah's warm coat

It's hard to tell, but there's a rooster peeking under Leah's arm  You can see his red coxcomb

Fred likes Leah's hair.  That is George behind her-look how much he's grown in a few weeks!  The white chicken is Livvy one of our Leghorns

The following pictures were taken this morning. You will notice how the heat  and letting the 16 older chickens run around in the chicken run has affected the grass.  I had not noticed the difference until posting the pictures for the blog.
Side note:  I never knew how entertaining chickens could be to watch!

On an entirelely different subject....

I wanted to write today because it is a personal celebration for me.  Even though I no longer have Eli’s heart beating within me, it was 30 years ago today that I received my 1st heart transplant.  It is because of that first transplant (and God’s plan) that I am even here today.  Eli's heart and I shared and incredible journey for 26 years, and although Eli’s heart no longer beats inside my chest, he will always be a part of my life that I will never forget to honor him when our anniversar date rolls around.

With his heart, I graduated high school and college. I was able to work full time and  travel the United States.  I  experienced other countries such as Mexico, Canada & France with his heart.  His heart allowed me to fall in love, get married & have two beautiful children who continue to amaze me.  His heart allowed me to find Jesus and live a fulfilling life.  And even though his heart began to fail, after beating loyally inside of me for 25 years, he still allowed me travel with my family, to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday, to experience a hot air balloon ride to check off my bucket list, and to spend more time with the people I love.  Our 26th (and last) year together was bittersweet, but his heart held on until my new heart was available for me in August 2016..

And so today, I honor and celebrate 30 amazing years that would not have happened except for a hero and his family whom I’ve never met.

If you're so inclined, here is a link to  a song that I'd like to share with you all.
