Southern States Adventure-Part II

When we last left off, we had arrived for the night at a campground in Canyon, Texas.  I had switched from a Harvest Host location to this campground so that we would have power since there was a heat wave in Texas and we would definitely need air conditioning.

The next morning we set off for Waco, Texas.  We arrived late in the afternoon at our campground which was on Lake Waco-an Army Corp of Engineers Lake.

At this point on the trip-I began to do some brief notes on my phone so I’ll share my first one here:

Lake Waco-June 14.  More humid today but a slight breeze. Lake is quiet. Not too many fishermen at 7:30 am.   With the exception of the air conditioning system on our trailer and our neighbors RV, the only sounds I hear are crickets chirping, the birds singing to each other and the soft rustling of the leaves in the trees.   Very peaceful with the exception of the pesky lone fly buzzing around me.  He must like my sticky skin from the humidity.   A shower will definitely be in order once we get back from town today.

I feel like a little girl on Christmas morning waiting for my parents to wake up so we can see what Santa brought.  With the exception of picking Leah up from Colorado, this is our first destination on the trip and the only reason Waco was on the destination list for our southern states tour.

The Silos.  Like so many others I became a fan of Fixer Upper, but late in the game.  I think I had 3 seasons to catch up on when we had it available when I was in Foster city recovering from my 2nd heart transplant.  I would spend the evenings after dinner binge watching it while Scott got caught up on work.   We had started a renovation project of our own the year before that was still in progress when The Call came from Stanford.  Of course, I was immediately hooked after 1 show and by the time we came home, Fixer Upper was released on Netflix and I indoctrinated Leah to the Magnolia craze.  So it is with great anticipation that we wait for the boys to finish fishing so we can have breakfast and begin another bucket list adventure touring The Silos and all things Magnolia.

After our tour of Magnolia, and discovering the wait at Magnolia Table was over and hour and the earliest reservation we could get was for August 2, we decided to eat at a nearby establishment and had some very tasty burgers at the Backyard Bar Stage & Grill.  It was too early in the afternoon to enjoy the venue with night life & music, but we could certainly picture how lively it would be.  Staff was extra friendly and since we were between normal lunch/dinner hours-the place had plenty of seating.  If you ever make it to Waco-I highly recommend this joint.

June 15: We arrived at our friend’s home in Flint, Texas in the afternoon and after parking the trailer and getting settled, we spent the afternoon on their boat dock. They moved to Texas from Rescue over 3 years ago and found their retirement home on a lake…. What an amazing spot to have the privilege to visit. Of course, Scott wants to move now-to fulfill his dream of living on a lake. (Or by any body of water really).

We went out for some Texas BBQ and then came back to spend the evening back on the deck while the boys continued to fish. I think I know where we’re hanging out until we depart for our next destination

Vern-he even tricks boaters who wave at him as they go by

June 16:  A quiet morning on Lake Palestine.  I completed my bible study and after a delicious breakfast that I didn’t have to make, we dressed in our bathing suits and hung out on the boat dock aka: Lakeside Lounge.  The boys "wet a line" off and on all day. The ladies chatted, listened to music, swam and ate.  All 4 of us were able to get a ride on wave runners and later in the evening after a delicious dinner of homemade fried fish, we took an evening tour of the lake on our friend's pontoon boat.  We all agreed we weren’t ready to leave and we definitely want to return.

Lakeside Lounge-where passing boats think its a bar!

June 17:  We’re packed and ready to go but our first stop is a tour of a swamp on Captain Ron's Swamp Tour of Caddo Lake.  We’re following our friends to this destination and having lunch before we depart on this swamp tour and then we’ll make our way to a campground about 40 minutes from New Orleans.

This completes our time in Texas.  More to come tomorrow, as our next stop is Louisiana!
