Week Four completed

Four weeks down and already we are taking a week off because Mom (aka teacher) and Dad (aka principal) will be on vacation in Cape Cod :)

Our fourth week of instruction also ended on a down note as both kids had to take sick days.  Though formal instruction was halted, they both still had books read to them and some educational videos they were able to view, so not all learning was lost.

We finished out our 3rd week with a field trip to the Railroad Museum in Sacramento for Nolan's 3rd birthday as well as a train ride &  a light-rail ride from Folsom to Old Sacramento and back.

Our 4th week began with a field trip to the Cameron Park fire station with our homeschool group.  I was very impressed with both Leah & Nolan's willingness to answer questions (and mostly knowing the answers) and not being shy to talk to the firemen and other kids.  My red-head children stand out in a crowd because of their hair, but on this day they stood out because they were the youngest of the 30 kids eager to answer the fireman's questions.  Nolan was one of maybe 6 kids willing to go give the fireman in full Turn-out gear a high-five.  They both had a good time and Leah told me after the presentation that she wanted daddy to teach her more about "fire stuff".  So we'll be adding that to our curriculmn when we return from our vacation.  Nolan had a great time too, but was very disappointed that he was too little to slide down the firemen's pole.  However his buddy Fireman Jeff did say he can come visit anytime and when he's big enough he can slide down the pole.

During the rest of the week before illness struck, Leah worked on handwriting and adding words to the storybook she began during week 3.  She had drawn her pictures for the book up to page 10 or so, and she recited her story for mom to write on the appopriate pages.  This project came up because we've been listening to Laura Ingall's story on CD and Leah has been asking me when she can "record" the story of her life.  I explained to her that the first step is to write it down and then I can record her reading it.  I purchased her a nice notebook and thus began our project.  However, once she received the notebook, I think the idea of her telling the story of her life disappeared, as the story she has me writing down is not of her life, however she is a character in the storybook, as well as the rest of the family.

Leah is also continuing to do well in her memorization and recitation of the bible verses she is learing for her Sparks group.  This is not as surprising as the fact that Nolan is also memorizing and reciting the same bible verses!  So amazing to hear John 3:16 come out of this little boy's mouth-word for word!  They truly are sponges and so I continue to realize the importance of what you can expose them to even at an early age (as well as what we should NOT expose them to).

That is pretty much our 4th week.  Between illness and getting ready for our vacation and the students vacation with the grandparents, it was a laid back week for our school.
