First Week ends in....

Success!    The kids and I adjusted nicely to the new routine and both kids seem to be excited about the classroom area in the house.  Even after school is over, I find them asking to do art in the classroom, or write in the classroom etc.  I was pleased on Wednesday when Leah kept wanting to continue with school long after our school day was over.  And she was eager to show dad our art project (paper plate masks-her idea) and have dad make one for himself after dinner.

Our routine this week:  School begins at 9:00.  After the Pledge of Allegiance and a bible verse, we start with an art project.  Once that is complete, I read a "New Reader" story and point out key words to Leah.  I then write these key words on the large white board & Leah copies them onto her personal white board.  (I think next week I'll give her a notebook to copy these words into).  We go over them several times.  Then while she "free draws" or to my surprise-copies more words down that are found on our Alphabet Poster, Nolan and I prepare a snack.  After snack we go outside to play until lunchtime.  After lunch is "quiet time" where Nolan naps, I read Leah 1 chapter book and she spends the rest of "quiet time" (2 hours) looking through a pile of books.  She did fall asleep 1 day this week while "reading".

After "quiet time" we have a snack and then we play a game that involves counting in some capacity.  Since this week we were going to Apple Hill for Field Trip Friday, we played Hi-Ho Cherrio & called them apples.  We also played Candy Land, Hullabaloo (more for shapes instead of counting), bingo and dominos. Though technically dominos ended up being more of a building game :)   After game time, I read some stories and then school is offically done, but sometimes other activites flow into being teaching opportunities.

Today-Friday we went to High Hill ranch in Apple Hill.  I had planned on doing some school before we left but time got away from me and I was starting to feel guilty that we didn't get any "school" in today, but thought back to my days in school on field trip days and I don't think we actually did "school" either.  LOL

I have to admit, I think the transition this week has been easier because Scott has been out of the "office".  It prevented the kids (mainly Nolan) from running back & forth to "tell dad something".  I have felt like lately I would spend half my day trying to keep the kids out of Scott's office so as to not disturb him.  We'll have to see what next week brings with him home again.

Posted a couple of pictures of both kids on their first day of school and a photo of our make-shift school room.  Hopefully in the near future it will be completed & organized and I can post a photo for comparison.

Stay tuned for our second week adventures....
